Welcome/Welkom

This blog is about my friend Jeanne and me. I met Jeanne on the internet years ago and since have kept contact with her through emails and common interests. A few years ago I was lucky enough to meet with Jeanne in person and it has made our friendship closer. Recently Jeanne bought herself a camera and we decided to create this blog and share some of our photos and hobbies.

You will notice this blog is in both English and Dutch.

Our Weekly Challenge

Jeanne and I decided to challenge each other on a weekly basis to take pictures on a certain subjects.  This past weeks subject was Buildings in a nearby city or town.  This was not an easy subject for me as I live out in the country and the closest city is about a 45 minute drive away.  But as luck may have it we were going to Edmonton, about 2 hours away from here, so I was able to take some pictures.  Now I must warn you that this is a part of Edmonton that every day people do not inhabit any longer.  These are pre World War I era buildings as the sign will tell.  Enjoy!

(you can enlarge the pictures by clicking on them)

Fort Edmonton.
One of the road signs stating the origin of the buildings located in this little town along the river.  Most buildings are from around the 1900 and every year the 'town' gets thousands of visitors.  Staff get dressed up in traditional clothing to welcome the visitors. No modern traffic or tools are allowed.

The AGT Building or the Alberta Government Telephone Building.  This company does not exist any longer it is now called Telus.

A theatre and bank.  Both take in money but at least the theatre is more fun to go to.

The Pipeshop next to the theatre.  A fun little shop with a great display in the window.  I am not a smoker but did enjoy looking at the pipes, cigars and other items.

The hotel
The hotel is still being used for functions like weddings, conventions and other parties.

There were lots of immigrants from the Ukraine in the early 1900 and they too had to have a place to worship.

And no town is complete without a firehall.

Click on the picture to be able to read the sign.

This was the bathroom for 'Tent City'  A place where people could pitch their tents and sell their wares.  I was sure glad I could go to the hotel to use theirs instead of having to use this one.

And of course there has to be a barn and stables for the animals around as well.  There were some animals around but I could not get close to them except this one.

He sure 'makes your heart sing'.  He was having an itch and scratching himself on the post.  I decided to help him out a bit and we 'talked' while I scratched.

Our plans were to take some more pictures of Edmonton later in the day but we ran out of time between visits and meetings and had to head back home again.  I am sure I will get another opportunity to show you Edmonton of today.
